Error message during the "Finalizing Installation" phase when you try to upgrade to Windows XP: "setup cannot copy file" (915161)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade a computer to Microsoft Windows XP, you receive an error message during the Finalizing Installation phase of the upgrade process. The error message is similar to the following:
setup cannot copy Filename.dll
ensure that the location specified below is correct
Drive Letter:\i386
Note You may receive this error message even though the specified location is correct.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt.
  2. At the command prompt, type CopyDrive Letter:\i386\Filename.dl_ %systemroot%\$win_nt$.~\i386, and then press ENTER.

    Note In this command, Drive Letter is a placeholder that represents the drive letter.

    Note In this command, Filename is a placeholder that represents the file name.
  3. Close the command prompt, and then click OK.
