SYMPTOMS

In very old Groove workspaces, you cannot mark items read.

CAUSE

In Groove, the version of the workspace is independent of the version of the Groove software. This behavior supports compatibility among users who have different versions of Groove. However, this may lead to confusion when you try to use a current Groove feature that is not supported in the workspace version.

RESOLUTION

To minimize this confusion, Groove relays the source of the failure in an error message. For example, read and unread marks are unavailable in Groove 1.0 workspaces. If you try to mark a discussion as read in a workspace that was created by using Groove 1.0 or that was created by a later version of Groove with the backward compatibility option enabled for Groove 1.0, you will receive the following error message:
You received the following error: Functionality not supported in this shared space because it uses an old version of dynamics.
Note Dynamics is the Groove component that maintains information about the state of workspaces.

MORE INFORMATION

If you want access to all current features in your workspace, you must replace the workspace with a new one. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Create a new version of the workspace by using the current version of Groove.
  2. Migrate the data from the old workspace to the new workspace.
  3. Invite all members of the old workspace to the new workspace.
If you only want current features in one tool, you can add the new version of that tool to the current workspace. Then, migrate data from the old tool to the new tool.

Note Just adding the new tool may not provide support for features that rely on a shared component, such as dynamics.
