Computers that share an Internet connection through an Internet Connection Sharing-enabled computer can no longer access that shared connection after you install Windows Live OneCare (914461)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Windows Live OneCare

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a computer on a network that has Internet Connection Sharing enabled. Then, you install Microsoft Windows Live OneCare on this computer. However, computers that were previously able to share an Internet connection through that Internet Connection Sharing-enabled computer can no longer access the shared connection.

CAUSE

Internet Connection Sharing uses one or more network ports to share an Internet connection with other computers on the network. By default, these ports are disabled by the Windows Live OneCare firewall. To enable a shared connection, you must manually enable a port through the Windows Live OneCare firewall.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, enable UDP port 53 on the Internet Connection Sharing-enabled computer that has Windows Live OneCare Live installed. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Live OneCare.
  2. In the left pane, click View or change settings.
  3. Click the Firewall tab, and then click Advanced settings under Other settings.
  4. Click the Port and Protocols tab, and then click Add.
  5. Specify the following information in the port options:

Name: Internet Connection Sharing Port 67 for DHCP
    TCP or UDP: UDP
    Port Range: 67 to 67
    Direction: Inbound
    Scope: Local network (subnet)

  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Add again to add another port.
  8. Specify the following information in the port options:

Name: Internet Connection Sharing Port 68 for DHCP
    TCP or UDP: UDP
    Port Range: 68 To 68
    Direction: Outbound
    Scope: Local network (subnet)

  9. Click OK.
The Internet Connection Sharing-enabled computer may function as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server to distribute IP addresses to computers that share the Internet connection. In this situation, you must manually enable ports for DHCP assignment.

Name: Internet Connection Sharing Ports 67 and 68 for DHCP
    TCP or UDP: UDP
    Port Range: 67 to 68
    Direction: Inbound
    Scope: Local network (subnet)

  6. Click OK.
