SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, you may be prompted for a user name and a password when you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 to browse a Web site. You may be prompted for these credentials if the Web site is hosted by Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) and is secured by using Windows authentication.

However, on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000, you may be prompted for a user name, a password, and a domain name when you use Internet Explorer 6 to browse a Web site.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

To provide the domain name on a computer that is running Windows XP and later versions of Windows XP, you must type the domain name followed by a backslash before the user name. For example, you must type domain name\user name in the User name box.
