The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSWhen you use a third-party virtual private network (VPN)
program on a computer that has Microsoft Windows Live OneCare installed, you
may receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:
Message 1Remote Host Unavailable Message 2Unable to establish a
connection CAUSEThis issue occurs because Windows OneCare blocks the protocols that
are required by the VPN program to establish VPN
connections.RESOLUTIONImportant These steps may increase your security risk. These steps may also
make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users
or by malicious software such as viruses. We recommend the process that this
article describes to enable programs to operate as they are designed to, or to
implement specific program capabilities. Before you make these changes, we
recommend that you evaluate the risks that are associated with implementing
this process in your particular environment. If you choose to implement this
process, take any appropriate additional steps to help protect your system. We
recommend that you use this process only if you really require this
process. To resolve this problem, enable the required protocol in the
Windows OneCare Firewall. To do this, follow these
steps:
- Open Windows Live OneCare.
- In
the left pane
of the Windows Live OneCaremain
window, click View or change settings
under Other
Tasks.
- Click the Firewall tab.
- Under Other settings,
click Advanced Settings.
- Click the Ports and Protocols
tab.
- Click to select the General Routing Encapsulation
(GRE) protocol or the Encapsulating Security Payload
(ESP) protocol, depending on which protocol that the VPN program
requires.
NoteIf you are not sure which
protocol the
VPN program requires, contact the
manufacturer of the VPN
program. - Click OK.
- Restart the VPN program and try to establish a VPN
connection.
Note When you have multiple computers that use Internet Connection Sharing, you may have to repeat these steps on each computer in the network. This includes the Internet Connection Sharing host computer. Warning We recommend that you enable a protocol only if you need it.
Enabling all the protocols in Windows Live OneCarecan make your computer more
vulnerable and less secure.
