You receive an error message when you restart the computer after you install the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP on a Windows XP SP2-based computer (913702)

SYMPTOMSOn a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, you install the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP. However, when you restart the computer, you may receive an error message. This error message states that Windows did not start successfully.CAUSEThis issue occurs if you do not have Windows XP SP2 installed on the primary partition. The Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP installation program assumes that the boot partition of the hard disk is on drive C. When Windows is not installed on drive C, the installation program copies the customized Ntldr file to the boot partition instead of to the system partition where this file is required. Therefore, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section when you restart the computer.WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, manually copy the customized Ntldr file to the system partition. To do this, follow these steps. Note This procedure assumes that Windows is installed on drive D of the computer. If Windows is installed on a drive other than drive D, substitute that drive letter wherever the procedure mentions drive D. - Log on to Windows as the local administrator.
Note You do not have to log on as the toolkit administrator. - Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
- At the command prompt, type cd\, and then press ENTER.
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:Note This step changes the file attributes of the Ntldr file so that the file can be copied.
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
copy ntldr ntldr.original Note This step creates a backup copy of the original Ntldr file. - At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:Note This step copies the modified Ntldr file to drive D.
- When you are prompted about whether you want to overwrite the Ntldr file, type y, and then press ENTER.
- At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER.
- Restart the computer.

If you decide to uninstall the toolkit, you must rename the backup Ntldr file after you uninstall the toolkit. Change the file name from Ntldr.original to Ntldr. You do not have to change the file attributes of the Ntldr file before you rename it.
