A software update is available for Transaction Integrator Windows Initiated Processing internal tracing in Host Integration Server 2004 (913671)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004

INTRODUCTION

This article discusses a software update that enhances Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004 tracing capabilities for Transaction Integrator (TI) Microsoft Windows Initiated Processing (WIP) internal tracing.

You can enable TI WIP internal tracing to help troubleshoot TI WIP issues. However, the trace data that is captured when TI WIP internal tracing is enabled does not include the actual application data that is being sent to and received from the host application.

Typically, a network tracing utility such as Network Monitor is used together with TI WIP internal tracing to view the actual data that is sent to or received from the host application.

MORE INFORMATION

This software update enhances the tracing capabilities of TI WIP to capture application data that is being sent to and received from the host application. Additionally, the application data is traced in an EBCDIC format and in an ASCII format.

The following is an excerpt of a TI WIP internal trace that captures application data that is being sent to the Cedarbank sample application:
18161	TCP Transport sent user data: Offset=0x00000000 d1819585 40c49685 40404040 40404040 Jane Doe

18161 TCP Transport sent user data: Offset=0x00000010 40404040 40404040 40404040 4040f1f0 10
18161 TCP Transport sent user data: Offset=0x00000020 f0f14040 00000010 0d 01
The following is an excerpt of the same trace that captures data that is being received from the Cedarbank sample application:
18162	TCP Transport received user data: Offset=0x00000000 d1819585 40c49685 40404040 40404040 Jane Doe

18162 TCP Transport received user data: Offset=0x00000010 40404040 40404040 40404040 4040f1f0 10
18162 TCP Transport received user data: Offset=0x00000020 f0f14040 00007771 2c 01
The additional tracing will correctly convert the data to ASCII characters and will display the ASCII characters between a space character (X'20') and a tilde character (X'7E'). Additionally, some data types that the TI WIP application uses will not be converted to ASCII or displayed in the ASCII section of the trace data.

In the sample trace, the host application returned 77712c. However, the data was not converted to ASCII or displayed in the ASCII section of the trace data. This behavior occurred because the data was defined as a packed decimal data type in the Type Library or in the Assembly.

To enable TI WIP internal tracing, follow these steps:
  1. In TI Manager, right-click Windows Initiated Processing, and then click Tracing.
  2. Click to select the check boxes for the trace categories for which you want to enable tracing.

Note When a trace category is enabled, the trace options that are associated with that category are also enabled. If you want to limit the information that will be traced, you can disable individual trace options.
  3. If you want to immediately apply the new trace settings, verify that Make Trace settings effective immediately is selected.
  4. Click OK, and then close TI Manager.
To disable TI WIP internal tracing, clear the check boxes for the trace categories in TI Manager.

Trace files are created in the Traces folder. The Traces folder is located in the folder where Host Integration Server 2004 is installed. For example, the path of the Traces folder may be the following:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Host Integration Server\Traces

Note Disable TI WIP internal tracing when you do not need it for troubleshooting. When tracing is enabled, trace files will continue to be created. One trace file is created for each TI WIP process. If you leave tracing enabled, the trace files may eventually consume lots of hard disk space. Additionally, tracing may affect system performance.

The following table contains a general overview of the kind of data that the trace categories capture.
Trace categoryData
GeneralProvides high-level information about end-to-end global processing.
TransportProvides detailed connection information about the activities on the SNA network or on the TCP network.
ConvertProvides detailed information about how the data is converted from COM and .NET data on the servers to COBOL or RPG data on the host.
Read LibProvides information about the contents of the type library. You can use this category to augment the information in the Convert trace.
TI Proxy Provides detailed information about object instantiation, about state transitions, and about method invocation.
If you want to capture only the application data that is being sent to and received from the host application, enable the following TI WIP trace categories and trace options.
Trace categoriesTrace options
TransportDetails
ConvertExtended Error Info
You can enable additional trace categories and trace options to capture trace data together with the application data.

Software update information

A supported feature that modifies the product's default behavior is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to modify the behavior that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that specifically require it. This feature may receive additional testing. Therefore, if the system is not severely affected by the lack of this feature, we recommend that you wait for the next Host Integration Server 2004 service pack that contains this feature.

To obtain this feature immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
