  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Repair option for a local area connection on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

The following steps of the repair operation failed: Purging the DNS Resolver Cache. Please contact your network administrator or ISP.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the DNS Client service is not started on the computer.

The Domain Name System (DNS) Client service resolves and caches DNS names for the computer. If the DNS Client service is stopped, the computer cannot resolve DNS names and locate Active Directory domain controllers. If the service is disabled, services that depend on the DNS Client service cannot start.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the Services list, double-click DNS Client.
  3. Click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Exit to close the Services snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Repair. For more information about the "Repair" option that is available when you right-click "Repair" on a LAN or high-speed Internet connection, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
