SYMPTOMS

When you try to repair, reinstall, or add a component to a Microsoft Office 2003 program that was installed from a location that created a Local Installation Source (LIS), you may receive the following error message that prompts you for the source files location of the Office 2003 Setup files:
Installation Error: File Not Found

A required installation file filename could not be found.

Original Installation Source Required:

If you installed Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 from a CD, please insert your CD. If you installed Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 over your computer network, please browse to the installation source on your network. Once you have located your installation source, click OK.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the LIS is enabled and if one of the following conditions is true:
  • The original Office source files location (installation point) that was used to deploy Office 2003 is no longer valid.
  • You have to use a different installation point from the installation point that was originally used to deploy Office 2003.
  • During a repair operation, you are prompted for the source files.
  • During an Office resiliency operation, you are prompted for the source files.
  • During the installation of an Office 2003 update, you are prompted for the source files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you can use the Custom Maintenance Wizard in the Microsoft Office 2003 Resource Kit to append or revise the Office 2003 installation points.

Note Although the following steps are typically used for an administrative installation point, the following steps are primarily intended for installations from a compressed CD source. A compressed CD source is created when you copy the original Office 2003 CD to a source location.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Office 2003 Custom Maintenance Wizard.
  2. Click Next.
  3. After you specify the .msi file and the .cmw file to use, go to step 10 in the Custom Maintenance Wizard.
  4. In the Identify Additional Servers pane, click Add.
  5. In the Add Network Server Entry dialog box, click Browse, or type the path of the installation point that you want to add. Then, click OK.

Note The installation point is added to the registry in the following location:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Delivery\SourceEngine\Downloads\{OfficeProductGUID}\Sources\{OfficeProductGUID}

  6. Click Finish to complete the Custom Maintenance Wizard.
  7. To apply your .cmw file to an existing Office installation, copy the Custom Maintenance Wizard (MaintWiz.exe) to your Office administrative installation point. Then, run MaintWiz.exe in apply mode on the user's computer.

For example, the following command will apply your .cmw file to a user's computer:

    MaintWiz.exe /c "path\filename.cmw" /qb-

Notes
  • In the lower-left corner of the Identify Additional Servers pane, there is a option that clears the existing source lists. When you click to select the Clear existing server list check box, all the installation points that were previously specified on a user's computer are deleted and replaced with the new list. To append additional servers to the existing source list, do not click to select this check box.
  • The Custom Maintenance Wizard can only be used to change the installation points if the LIS is enabled.
  • You can use the Custom Maintenance Wizard to add installation points only if you already have the LIS enabled.
  • You can specify multiple installation points for redundancy.
