Video files may not play correctly if you change the screen orientation on a wide screen display in Windows XP (913106)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition

SYMPTOMS

You change the screen orientation by rotating the screen by 90 degrees or by 270 degrees when you play video on a wide screen display. The video may not play correctly depending on the location of the video program preview window. You may see only a black screen. This behavior may occur even though the video progress indicator on the video program preview window advances.

Notes
  • You may not experience this behavior if the video program preview window is inside the viewable desktop screen area. For example, if the video program preview window is at the bottom of the desktop area, you experience this behavior.
  • Screen orientation can be changed from landscape to portrait on wide screen display-based computers. This depends on the graphics adapter that is installed on the computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:
  • Move the video program preview window to a location that is inside the viewable desktop screen area. When you do this, the preview window is fully visible.
  • Stop the video and then play the video again.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.
