After you install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, you can no longer connect to the SMS site server by using a remote SMS Administrator console (913000)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. Microsoft SMS 2003 is installed on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. Then, you upgrade the Windows Server 2003-based computer to Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). In this scenario, you can no longer connect to the SMS site server by using a remote SMS Administrator console.

Additionally, an error that is similar to the following is logged in the Adminui.log file:
[E24][Date Time]:Info(ConnectServer): Connecting to server : 
namespace \\ComputerName\root\sms\site_Name 
[E24][Date Time]:Info(ConnectServer): Connecting to server. Network : 
\\ComputerName\root\sms\site_Name 
[E24][Date Time]:Error(ConnectServer): Possible UI connection error code is -2147024891 [0x80070005]
[E24][Date Time]:Failed to set the connection. error code: -2147024891 
If you use the Wbemtest tool to connect to the \\computer_name\root\default namespace, you receive the following error message:
Number: 0x80070005
Facility: Win32
Description: Access is denied

CAUSE

When Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 for is installed, a new local group is created. This new local group is named Distributed COM Users.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, add the users who are trying to make remote connections to the SMS admin console to the Distributed COM Users local group.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
