No translation options appear when you use Office Proofing Tools to translate a document from English to Japanese in Word 2003 and in Word 2002 (912678)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Word 2003 and in Microsoft Word 2002, when you use Microsoft Office Proofing Tools to translate a document from English to Japanese, the local Japanese translation dictionary does not display any translation options in the Research panel. This problem may also occur when you translate a document from English to Korean or from English to Chinese.

CAUSE

The East Asian language proofing files are not installed on the computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. On the Languages tab, click to select the Install files for East Asian languages check box. Then, click OK to confirm that you want to install the East Asian languages files.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. If you are prompted to insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD drive, insert the CD, and then click OK.
  5. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes. If you are not prompted to restart the computer, click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Restart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Install Word 2003 or Word 2002.
  2. Install Office Proofing Tools.
  3. On the Tools menu, point to Language, click Translate, and then click English to Japanese.
Notice that the Japanese translation dictionary does not display any translation options in the Research panel.
