Error message when you try to burn an ATSC-recorded program to a video DVD in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005: "Unsupported File type" (912645)

SYMPTOMS

You are running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Microsoft Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition installed. When you try to use the Create CD/DVD experience to burn an Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC)-recorded program to a video DVD, you may receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:
Unsupported File type
Creation failure
Note This problem occurs early in the recording process, before the disc is actually burned. Therefore, the DVD may still be usable.

CAUSE

The problem occurs because the ATSC-recorded program contains a "slice error" discontinuity.

A slice error discontinuity is an interruption in the video stream. For example, when you edit commercials out of a recorded program, small interruptions are inserted in the stream with each edit. Also, an interruption can occur when a tuner or a driver experiences an error. In these cases, the video may play correctly. However, when you use the Create CD/DVD experience to try to burn the recorded program as a video DVD, you may receive an error message.

WORKAROUND

You may be able to work around this problem by using a third-party disc recording utility to burn the ATSC-recorded program to a DVD as a video DVD. This video DVD may then be successfully played on a consumer electronics DVD player. Some third-party disc recording utilities ignore slice error discontinuities or can process them.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
