Programs that require lots of memory may not run after you install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (912570)

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Web programs that must allocate 1.3 gigabytes (GB) of contiguous memory may not work.
  • The ISAPI filter cannot allocate more than 1 GB of memory.
  • You may receive an error message that resembles one of the following:
    • Not Enough Memory
    • Out of memory
    • Not enough storage

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Xpsp2res.dll file does not specify its base address. Therefore, the .dll file is loaded into memory at location 0x10000000. This configuration prevents much memory from being allocated to programs. Therefore, the virtual memory that is available to the programs is fragmented.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

Important This hotfix includes a new Xpsp2res.dll file that dynamically finds a memory location to reduce virtual memory fragmentation. Before you apply this hotfix, we recommend that you ask the vendor of your programs to verify that this solution is acceptable.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
