Non-Express Editions of Visual Studio 2005 do not function correctly when a Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition is installed on the same computer and has an installation path that contains more than 57 characters (912162)

SYMPTOMS

Non-Express Editions of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 do not function correctly, and certain files cannot be accessed when the following conditions are true:

You install a Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition on your computer.
The installation path for the Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition contains more than 57 characters.
You install a non-Express Edition of Visual Studio 2005 on the same computer that is running the Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition.

Note Only the first installed version of Visual Studio 2005 offers a choice for the product installation path. All subsequent Visual Studio 2005 product installations automatically install to the originally selected product installation path.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions allow for the installation path to contain a maximum of 100 characters. However, all other non-Express Editions of Visual Studio 2005 only allow for a maximum of 57 characters in the installation path.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, make sure that the installation path for the Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition contains less than 57 characters when you plan to install a non-Express Edition of Visual Studio 2005 on the same computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
