FIX: You may receive an error message when you try to use backup software to back up a database in SQL Server 2005 for Itanium-based Systems (912021)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use backup software to back up a database in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for Itanium-based Systems, the database backup operation may be unsuccessful. You may receive the following error message:
HRESULT 80040002.
Microsoft SQL-DMO: [SQL-DMO]Code execution exception: EXCEPTION_DATATYPE_MISALIGNMENT
For example, you may experience this problem when you try to use IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backup software.

Note You do not experience this problem when you try to use backup software to back up a database in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 64-bit edition or in SQL Server 2005 32-bit edition.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the backup software uses SQL Distributed Management Objects (SQL-DMO) to call the GetSpaceAvailableInMB property.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1.
