Error message when you try to open a Word 2003 document that is stored on a Windows SharePoint Services site or on a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site: "Permission for this document is currently restricted" (912011)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document that is stored on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services site or on a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site, the document does not open. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Permission for this document is currently restricted. If you are not running Microsoft Office 2003 or an application that supports documents with restricted permission, you can read this document by downloading the Rights Management Add-on for Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The Word 2003 document is protected with Information Rights Management (IRM).
  • Support for Rights Management Add-on for Internet Explorer is enabled on another computer that has Word 2002 installed.
  • You try to open the document in Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a client computer that is running Word 2002 and the Rights Management Add-on for Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Word 2003 post-Service Pack 2 Hotfix Package that is dated December 16, 2005. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you apply this hotfix, follow these steps to repair the document:
  1. Open the document in Word 2003.
  2. Change the document.
  3. Save the document.
