FIX: COMTI transactions may fail when you apply a Host Integration Server 2000 post-SP2 COMTI update (912002)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 SP2

SYMPTOMS

After you apply a Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 post-Service Pack 2 (SP2) COMTI update, Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) Transaction Integrator (COMTI) transactions that were working correctly may fail. The problem affects COMTI transactions that use remote environments (RE) when the REs support explicit security to connect to Information Management Systems (IMS) applications over TCP/IP. The problem is most likely to occur if the password is longer than the user ID that is sent to the IMS application on the IBM mainframe.

When this problem occurs, the following event is logged on the system that is running COMTI: Event ID: 102
Source: COMTI
Description: (102) COM Transaction Integrator reported the following exception to the client:

Exception description: (2166) The TCP transport, using IMS OTMA, received a Request Status Message; Return Code=8, Reason Code=40.

CAUSE

The problem occurs because COMTI incorrectly compares the length of the password against the length of the user ID that is sent to the IMS application. When the password is longer than the user ID, COMTI incorrectly truncates the password. The IBM mainframe returns a security violation to COMTI and triggers the Event 102 (2166) error.
