Some DVB-T TV channel numbers appear to be incorrectly assigned or are assigned to different stations when you scan for DVB-T TV channels in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (911992)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you scan for Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial/Antenna (DVB-T) TV channels in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you may notice one or more of the following issues:
  • Some DVB-T TV channel numbers appear to be incorrectly assigned. For example, channel numbers start at 800 instead of 700.
  • Some DVB-T TV channel numbers are assigned to different stations than the last time that you scanned for DVB-T TV channels.
  • Some stations may not be assigned a channel number. This issue occurs if a station is broadcasting a Multimedia and Hypermedia information coding Expert Group-5 (MHEG-5) stream that does not contain audio or video content.

CAUSE

These issues may occur because of the following reasons:
  • Some channel numbers may appear to be incorrectly assigned because a conflict occurs between a radio station and a TV station. To avoid the conflict, Media Center uses an offset of 100. This means that a value of 100 is added to the expected channel number.
  • If a station goes off the air or if a new station comes on the air, a different number of stations may be available when you scan for DVB-T TV channels. Therefore, the previous channel numbers may not be preserved when you scan for DVB-T TV channels again.
  • Media Center does not detect or assign a channel number to a station that is broadcasting only an MHEG-5 stream that does not contain audio or video content. For example, some stations may continue to broadcast an MHEG-5 stream when they stop broadcasting audio and video content during a certain time of day. Therefore, Media Center may not assign channel numbers to these stations. Or, Media Center may assign a different channel number to a station than the last time that you scanned for DVB-T TV channels.

WORKAROUND

To work around some of these issues, use any one or more of the following methods.

Method 1: Manually assign channel numbers

You can work around the issue where some DVB-T TV channel numbers are assigned with an offset of 100. You can also work around the issue where previous channel numbers are not preserved when you scan for DVB-T TV channels again. To work around these issues, manually assign channel numbers. After you manually assign a channel number, the channel number will not change when you scan for DVB-T TV channels again.

To manually assign a channel number, follow these steps:
  1. Start Media Center, and then select Settings.
  2. Select TV.
  3. Select Guide.
  4. Select Edit Channels, and then click Edit Numbers.
  5. Scroll down to find the listing for the channel number that you want to edit.
  6. Click the box that contains the current channel number, and then type the new channel number that you want to use.
  7. Select Save.

Method 2: Scan for DVB-T TV stations again

You can work around the issue where Media Center does not detect a station that is broadcasting only an MHEG-5 stream that does not contain audio or video content. To work around this issue, scan for DVB-T TV channels again at a time when the missing station is broadcasting a program that contains audio or video content.
