How to capture an OFX log file in Money (911941)

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to save a log file for the Open Financial Exchange (OFX) data that is imported into Microsoft Money to verify the data or the format of the data or both that is imported from your financial institution.

If you download an OFX file directly from your financial institution's Web site, you can save the file instead of opening or importing the file directly into Money. If Money is communicating directly with your financial institution's OFX server, you can enable a registry setting in Microsoft Windows to capture the download as a separate log file. You can save a log file for a direct connection between Money and your financial institution.

Microsoft Money 2006 and later versions

To save a log file for a connection to an OFX provider in Money 2006 and later versions, follow these steps:
  1. Start Money 2006 or a later version.
  2. Insert the Money CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the Setup program from starting automatically.
  3. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  4. Right-click the Money CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive, and then click Explore.
  5. Double-click PSS.
  6. Double-click Provlogs.reg, click Yes, and then click OK.

    Note You must run the Provlogs.reg file when you have Money 2006 or later versions open. If you have to close and then restart Money 2006 or a later version, you must rerun the Provlogs.reg file. Because of the enhanced security in Money 2006 and later versions, logging is automatically turned off every time that you start or close Money 2006 and later versions.
  7. In Money 2006 or a later version, click Update now to download the statement from your financial institution.
After you perform step 7, two log files are created. These log files are named banknamerq.txt and banknamers.txt respectively. Here, bankname represents the name of your financial institution. The banknamerq.txt file represents the log file for the request that you sent to the financial institution. The banknamers.txt file represents the log file for the response that you received from the financial institution.

Microsoft Money 2002, Microsoft Money 2003, Microsoft Money 2004, and Microsoft Money 2005

To save a log file for a connection to an OFX provider in Money 2002, Money 2003, Money 2004, and Money 2005, follow these steps:
  1. Close Money.
  2. Insert the Money CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the Setup program from starting automatically.
  3. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  4. Right-click the Money CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive, and then click Explore.
  5. Double-click PSS.
  6. Double-click Provlogs.reg, click Yes, and then click OK.
  7. Start Money, and then click Update now to download the statement from your financial institution.

Save a log file in a downloaded version of Money

If you have downloaded and installed your version of Money instead of installing Money from a CD, follow these steps:
  1. Close Money.
  2. Download the Provlogs.reg and Nologs.reg files. For more information about how to download these files, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  3. When you are prompted to open or to save the file, click Save to save the file.
  4. Select the desktop as the location, and then click Save.
  5. Right-click a blank area of your desktop, point to New, and then click Folder.
  6. Type MoneyLogs, and then press ENTER.
  7. Extract the contents of the Moneyregkeys.zip file to the MoneyLogs folder.

    Note For more information about how to extract contents of a Zip file to a folder, see the product help or documentation for the Zip software that you use.
  8. On your desktop, double-click MoneyLogs.
  9. Double-click Provlogs.reg, click Yes, and then click OK.

    Note If you are using Money 2006, you will have to run the Provlogs.reg file when Money is running.
  10. Start Money, and then click Update Now so that it downloads the statement from your financial institution.

Microsoft Money 2001 and earlier versions of Money

To save a log file for a connection to an OFX provider in Money 2001 and earlier versions of Money, follow these steps:
  1. On the Money navigation bar, click Online Banking, and then click the Connect tab.
  2. If you receive the following error message, click Yes:
    A prior call to Online Services was interrupted and must be completed before other online tasks can be done. Do you want to complete the call now?
  3. In the Connect dialog box, after you enter your password, press CTRL+SHIFT when you click Connect.
Step 3 saves two log files in the location of your Money data file. The names of the log files depend on the version of Money that you are running. In Microsoft Money 2000 and later versions of Money, the log files are named banknamerq.txt and banknamers.txt respectively. Here, bankname represents the name of your financial institution. The banknamerq.txt file represents the log file for the request that you sent to the financial institution. The banknamers.txt file represents the log file for the response that you received from the financial institution.
