Error message when you try to use the put_ProxyAddresses method on the IMailRecipient interface in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server: "E_UNEXPECTED (0x8000FFFF)" (911834)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the put_ProxyAddresses method on the IMailRecipient interface to set the proxy address setting for a mail recipient in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, the call does not finish. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
E_UNEXPECTED (0x8000FFFF)

CAUSE

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • You did not correctly register an address generation DLL for the address type that the production environment is using.
  • The address generation DLL does not exist.

RESOLUTION

Prerequisites

You must install Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3) before you install the hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply the hotfix. However, you must restart services and programs that use Cdoexm.dll or Exspmsg.dll.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

After you apply this hotfix, you may receive the following error message when you try to use the put_ProxyAddresses method on the IMailRecipient interface to set the proxy address setting for a mail recipient:
E_NOTIMPL (0x80004001)
You receive this error message if the address type is not registered in the production environment.

Note The put_ProxyAddresses method may return error messages that have different values. These different values signify other errors.
