SYMPTOMS

Files in replicated folder roots have the hidden and system attributes set in Microsoft Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" beta 2. You cannot change the attributes.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the primary computer in the replication group is configured by using the root of the volume as its replicated folder. By default, the root of the volume has the hidden and system attributes configured. When this folder is replicated, the attributes are replicated to the folder roots in the set. This behavior transfers the hidden and system attributes to the files.

RESOLUTION

Do not use the root of a volume as a replicated folder. Remove and then re-create the replicated folder root at least one folder deep in a volume.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot remove the hidden and system attributes from the files in a replicated folder. The Attribute.exe (ATTRIB) program will not change the attributes. Additionally, the ATTRIB program does not report any errors even though the change fails.
