You cannot install Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 on a server that is running the MSDN version of Live Communications Server 2005 (911788)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1, when used with:
- Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Standard Edition
SYMPTOMSYou cannot install Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Service
Pack 1 (SP1) on a server that is running the MSDN version of Microsoft Office Live
Communications Server 2005. When you use Live Communications Server 2005
SP1
to upgrade the MSDN version of Live Communications Server 2005, you can run all
the commands that are required to prepare the schema, the forest, and the
domain partition in the Setup tool. However, one of the following options is
unavailable, depending on the version of Live Communications Server that you
are using:
- Installation Files for Standard Edition
Server
- Installation Files for Enterprise Edition
Server
Additionally, if you use the Lcserver_lcs2005tosp1.msp file to
manually install Live Communications Server 2005 SP1, you may receive the
following error message: Upgrading from the currently MSDN
version of Live Communication Server to SP1 is not supported. You can upgrade
only from LCS 2005 Volume/Retail to SP1 RC Listed below is the version that
will cause this issue Live Communication Server 2005 Microsoft Corporation
Version 2.0.5369.0(MSDN) CAUSEThis problem occurs because you can only install Live
Communications Server 2005 SP1 if you are running the retail version of Live
Communications Server 2005. You cannot use the retail version of the service pack to
upgrade the MSDN version of Live Communications Server 2005.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, remove the current
installation of Live Communications Server 2005. Then, install the MSDN version of
Live Communications Server 2005 SP1. To do this, follow these steps:
- Export the database by using the Dbimpexp.exe
tool.

Note You must export the database before you remove Live
Communications Server 2005. - Deactivate Live Communications Server 2005. To deactivate
Live Communications Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, follow these steps:
- Start the Microsoft Office Live Communications Server
2005 tool.
- Expand Forest -
domain_name.com.
- Expand Domains, expand
domain_name, expand Live
Communications servers and pools, and then expand your enterprise pool.

Right-click the server that you want to deactivate, and then click
Deactivate.
- Follow the steps in the wizard that appears.
To
deactivate Live Communications Server 2005 Standard Edition, follow these
steps:- Start the Microsoft Office Live Communications Server
2005 tool.
- Expand the node that contains the server that you want
to deactivate.
- Right-click the server, and then click
Deactivate.
- Click Start, click Control
Panel, and then click Add or Remove
Programs.
- Click Live Communications Server 2005, and
then click Remove.
- Install
the MSDN version of Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 on the
server.

Note If you remove the MSDN version of Live Communications Server 2005
and then install the MSDN version of Live Communications Server SP1, the Live
Communications Server users still exist in Active Directory. Additionally, the
Live Communications Server users are still enabled. STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section.
