FIX: You may receive an error message when you try to seek through a streaming content file and the Fast Cache feature is enabled in Windows Media Services 9 Series (911710)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Media Services 9 Series
- Microsoft Producer for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you use Microsoft Windows Media Player to view a streaming content file, and you try to seek to a point in the content that has not been cached, you may receive the following error message: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true: - The content is a Windows Media (.wmv) file that was created by using Microsoft Producer for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003.
- The file includes Rich Media content.
- The file is streamed from a Microsoft Windows Media Services 9 Series publishing point.
- Windows Media Services 9 Series has the Fast Cache feature enabled on the publishing point.
When you click More Information in the message box, the following information appears: Error C00D1199: Cannot play the file If you do not seek to an uncached point in the file, the file plays as expected. If you seek to a point in the file that the Fast Cache feature has already cached, you do not experience an error. CAUSEAlthough Windows Media Services can seek through audio content and video content, Windows Media Services cannot seek through Rich Media content.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, use one of the following methods: - Turn off the Fast Cache feature on the publishing point from which the Rich Media content is being streamed.
- Turn off the Fast Cache feature for the streaming connection. To do this, use the following query string when you provide the URL of the Rich Media content.
WMCache=0 - Do not save content from Microsoft Producer in the Rich Media format.
STATUS Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
