You receive a "The document cannot be inserted" error message when you try to insert a document as a picture in OneNote 2003 or in Office 2003 (911005)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert a document as a picture in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 or in Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), the picture of the document is not inserted. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The document cannot be inserted. To fix this problem, try one or more of the following:
* Make sure a Microsoft Office 2003 program that can open the document is installed on your computer.
* Open the document by using an Office 2003 program, and then convert the document to the Office 2003 version of the program.
* Change your installation of Office 2003 and install Microsoft Office Document Imaging.
* If the document is password-protected, enter the correct password.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer print driver is no longer available.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Exit the application that you are using.
  2. Rename the Mdimon.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Search, and then click All files and folders.
    2. In the All or part of the file name box, type Mdimon.dll.
    3. In the Look in box, click Local Hard Drives.
    4. Click Search.
    5. In the list of files, right-click Mdimon.dll, and then click Rename.
    6. Type Mdimon.old, and then press ENTER.
    7. On the File menu, click Close to close the Search Results window.
  3. Remove Microsoft Office Document Imaging. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
    2. In the list of currently installed programs, click Microsoft Office 2003, and then click Change.
    3. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
    4. Click to select the Choose advanced customization of applications check box, and then click Next.
    5. Expand Office Tools.
    6. Click the icon for Microsoft Office Document Imaging, and then click Not Available.
    7. Click Update.
  4. Reinstall Microsoft Office Document Imaging. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
    2. In the list of currently installed programs, click Microsoft Office 2003, and then click Change.
    3. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
    4. Click to select the Choose advanced customization of applications check box, and then click Next.
    5. Expand Office Tools.
    6. Click the icon for Microsoft Office Document Imaging, and then click Run all from My Computer.
    7. Click Update.
