The Pen tool is unavailable in OneNote 2003 (911004)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, the Pen tool is unavailable (appears dimmed).

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • The handwriting recognition feature is enabled on the Language bar.
  • Speech recognition is turned on in Microsoft Office Word 2003.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, disable handwriting recognition or turn off speech recognition in Word 2003.

Disable handwriting recognition

To disable handwriting recognition, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, and then click Regional and Language Options.
  2. Click the Languages tab, and then click Details.
  3. Under Installed services, click Handwriting Recognition, and then click Remove.

Turn off speech recognition in Word 2003

To turn off speech recognition in Word 2003, click Speech on the Tools menu.

Note When speech recognition is turned off in Word 2003, there is no check mark next to the Speech command on the Tools menu.
