Error message when you try to restore a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 database: "All restore operations did not succeed" (910924)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to restore a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 database, the database is not restored. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
All restore operations did not succeed. See the log for details.
Event ID: 0
Source: Sharepoint Portal Server
Category: None

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you split the SharePoint Portal Server database into multiple files to enhance storage performance.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the hotfix that is described in this section. This hotfix will help restore multiple database files to their original database file path. Additionally, this hotfix will enable the following functionality in SharePoint Portal Server when the SharePoint Portal Server database is associated with multiple database files:
  • The ability to restore a database that was backed up to multiple files in SPSBackup.
  • The ability to restore the backup to a mirror server or to a mirror server farm that is configured to have the same partitions as the original server.
  • The ability to restore the backup to the same server in either of the following scenarios:
    • Your organization experiences a disaster.
    • You want to overwrite the current database.

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 post-Service Pack 1 Hotfix Package that is dated November 28, 2005. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to enable the hotfix

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SharePoint Portal Server

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type RestoreToOriginalDBPaths, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click RestoreToOriginalDBPaths, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
