256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
INTRODUCTION
The BMONITOR Subsystem (BMSS) is the underlying transport for the following devices:
- Devices that are running the Deployment Agent
- Devices that are running an operating system and the Administration Agent
The BMSS network service binding settings consist of the BindPolicy and BindExcept registry entries. By default, BMSS binds to all network interfaces. BMSS supports the network service binding mechanism that is specified for Microsoft Automated Deployment Services (ADS). However, BMSS does not support the
IP= exception statement in the BindExcept registry entry.
MORE INFORMATION
When the ADS client binds to a specified media access control (MAC)
address on Network Load Balancing (NLB)-enabled servers, the ADS client reports its own IP address as the one that belongs to the NLB cluster. The ADS server now refers to this ADS client by using the IP address of the NLB cluster. Therefore, ADS client/server connectivity may be lost.
This software update adds support for the
IP= exclusion statement in the BindExcept registry entry for BMSS. After you apply this update, you can exclude the IP addresses of the NLB cluster.
To do this, you add the
IP= exclusion statement to the BindExclude settings of the BMSS network service binding.
The BMSS network service binding settings are stored in the following registry subkey:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BMSS
Update information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Automated Deployment Services service pack that contains this hotfix.
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To apply this hotfix and to enable the use of the
IP= exclude statement on the NLB-enabled server, follow these steps:
- Extract the software update to a folder that can be accessed by the NLB-enabled server.
Note The following two versions of the software update are extracted:- The ADS1.1-RTM-KB910831-X86-ENU.exe file for 32-bit computers.
- The ADS1.1-RTM-KB910831-X64-ENU.exe file for 64-bit computers.
- Install the ADS client on the NLB-enabled server.
Note The ADS client binds to the MAC address of the interface. - Apply the appropriate software update to the NLB-enabled server.
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BMSS
- Right-click BindPolicy, click Modify, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
