SYMPTOMS

After you use the Exchange Task Wizard to hide the membership of a global distribution list in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you cannot select the Manager can update membership list check box on the Managed by tab in the group's Properties dialog box. The check box is unavailable.

Note The Exchange Task Wizard and the group's Properties dialog box can be accessed in the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you must select the Manager can update membership list check box for the distribution list before you use the Hide Membership feature. If the list membership is already hidden, you must first unhide the membership.

If the distribution list is already hidden, go to step 1. If the distribution list is not hidden, go to step 2.
  1. Unhide the membership of the group. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, right-click the group object, and then click Exchange Tasks.
    2. If the Exchange Task Wizard Welcome page opens, click Next. If the page does not open, go to step 1c.
    3. Click Unhide Membership, click Next two times, and then click Finish.
  2. Select the Manager can update membership check box. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, right-click the group object, and then click Exchange Tasks.
    2. Click the Managed by tab.
    3. Click to select the Manager can update membership check box, and then click OK.
  3. Hide the group membership. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, right-click the group object, and then click Exchange Tasks.
    2. If the Exchange Task Wizard Welcome page opens, click Next. If the page does not open, go to step 3c.
    3. Click Hide Membership, click Next two times, and then click Finish.
When you open the group's Properties dialog box, the check box is still unavailable. However, the Manager can update membership list option is already selected. Additionally, the option is enabled.
