Error message when you try to move a mailbox from one Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) server to another Exchange Server 2003 SP1 server in another site: "There is no such object on the server" (910807)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, Service Pack 1 (SP-1)
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition, Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

SYMPTOMS

When you try to move a mailbox from one server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to another Exchange Server 2003 SP1 server in another site, you receive the following error message:
There is no such object on the server.
This issue occurs in a mixed-mode Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 organization.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the mailbox object that you try to move does not have a corresponding mailbox object in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, make sure that a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 directory object exists for the mailbox that you are trying to move. The Exchange Server 5.5 directory object must exist on the server that is running the Site Replication Service (SRS) in the target site, even if there is no Exchange Server 5.5 server in the target site.

Make sure that the mailbox object that you are trying to move is replicated before you try to move the mailbox. To do this, configure a two-way recipient connection agreement between the source and the target sites. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Verify the SRS server that is responsible for the target site. To do this, view the properties of the configuration connection agreement for that site.
  2. Verify that an Exchange Server 5.5 directory object exists for the mailbox that you are trying to move. To do this, use the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program to perform a directory export on the Tools menu while connected to the SRS server of the target site.
  3. To replicate the mailbox object on the target site, create a two-way recipient connection agreement from the source site to the target site. The recipient connection agreement must be a two-way connection agreement even though the administrative group may contain only Exchange Server 2003 SP1 servers. Exchange Server 2003 SP1 includes a feature that lets you move mailboxes across sites. In Exchange Server 2003 SP1, the Exchange Task Wizard includes the new "Cross Administrative Group Move" task. These cross-site moves are permitted for the following scenarios.
