Xbox 360: Console behaves as if no disc is present in the drive (disc is inserted, but does not load) (910798)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Xbox Video Game System
  • Microsoft Xbox 360

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a CD, a DVD, or a game in the Xbox 360 console disc tray, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • The disc does not load.
  • The disc drive status indicator in the Xbox 360 Dashboard may momentarily change to "Reading", only to revert back to "Open Tray", and the game or DVD movie does not start.
  • The console boots to the Xbox Dashboard.
  • You do not receive an error message.
Important This issue is a separate issue from when the console screen stops responding and you receive an error message. If you receive an error message, search for the error message in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. If the console freezes, follow the steps that are listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

907586 Xbox 360: The screen freezes

  2. Determine whether the issue has occurred more than one time. If this is the first time that you have experienced this behavior, it is likely that the issue will not occur again.
  3. If you have previously downloaded an Autoupdate for Xbox Live, you can set your console to automatically load a disc in the DVD tray. Or, you can set your console to start in the Xbox 360 dashboard. For more information about how to check this setting, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

919388 Xbox 360: How to configure the way that the Xbox 360 console starts when you turn on the console

  4. Test the console by using a different disc. If the problem occurs with only one disc, search the Microsoft Knowledge Base to determine whether that particular disc has any known issues. Use game discs to test game freezes and DVDs to test DVD freezes.
  5. Determine whether the console is overheating. Make sure that the console is not in a poor environment such as near a heat source. Heat sources can include TVs, computers, monitors, and other electrical devices. If the console is in a poor location, move it to a location that has sufficient ventilation, such as on a table or on the floor. If this resolves the issue, the previous location likely did not provide sufficient ventilation for the console to function correctly. Review the Xbox instruction manual for information about correct placement of the console.
  6. Verify that the Xbox console is set to the correct time and date. After you verify that the date and time are set correctly on Xbox 360 console, verify that the console does not require that you reset the date and time every time that you turn it on. This issue may be the cause of the Xbox console not recognizing the disc media.
  7. Disconnect all the unnecessary peripheral devices, including the Xbox 360 Hard Drive, and then test the console.
  8. Test the disc in a different console. If you do not have another console available, exchange the disc at the retailer where you purchased it.
  9. If these steps do not resolve the issue, Microsoft may have to service the console.
