Windows Media Player streams content through the proxy for addresses that you add to the "Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with" text box (910388)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You enable Microsoft Windows Media Player proxy settings for streaming protocols that are in the Windows Media Player Administrative Template (Wmplayer.adm). You enable these settings by using the Group Policy Object Editor (Gpedit.msc). You click to select the Bypass proxy for local addresses check box, and you type proxy addresses in the Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with text box.

In this scenario, you may find that Windows Media Player ignores the text that you add to the Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with text box. Windows Media Player streams content through the proxy for addresses that you add to the Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with text box.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Windows Media Player Administrative Template incorrectly sets the value that corresponds to the Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with text box to the BypassProxyLocalAddress registry entry. Windows Media Player looks for this value under the ExludeFromProxy registry entry.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, modify the Wmplayer.adm file so that it points to the correct registry key. Then, reapply the edited Wmplayer.adm file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Wmplayer.adm file in Notepad.

    Note The Wmplayer.adm file is located in the %Windir%\Inf folder.
  2. Click Edit, and then click Replace.
  3. In the Find what box, type BypassProxyLocalAddress.
  4. In the Replace with box, type ExludeFromProxy.
  5. Click Find Next, and then click Replace to correct the setting for HTTP.
  6. Click Find Next, and then click Replace to correct the setting for Microsoft Media Server (MMS).
  7. Click Find Next, and then click Replace to correct the setting for Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP).
  8. Click Save, and the quit Notepad.
  9. Reapply the updated Windows Media Player Administrative template. To do this, click Start, click Run, type gpupdate /force, and then click OK.
  10. Enable Windows Media Player proxy settings for the protocols that are in the Windows Media Player Administrative Template.
