SUMMARY

This article describes how to connect an Xbox 360 console to a TV by using the Xbox 360 D-Connector HD AV Cable.

MORE INFORMATION

Connect an Xbox 360 console to a high-definition TV

  1. Turn off the Xbox 360 console.
  2. Connect the D-Connector HD AV Cable to the AV port on the Xbox 360 console.
  3. Set the HDTV switch on the AV Connector to HDTV.

Note Only set the switch to HDTV if the TV supports high-definition resolution, such as 480p, 720p, or 1080i.
  4. Connect the D-connector on the D-Connector HD AV Cable to the corresponding D-connector jack on the high-definition TV. Do not use the yellow RCA composite video connector.
  5. Connect the red and white RCA audio connectors on the D-Connector HD AV Cable to the corresponding colored input jacks on the HDTV.
  6. Turn on the Xbox 360 console. In the System section, you can change your display and HDTV settings. Select the appropriate high-definition video setting for the HDTV.

Connect an Xbox 360 console to a standard-definition TV

  1. Turn off the Xbox 360 console.
  2. Connect the AV connector on the D-Connector HD AV Cable to the AV port on the Xbox 360 console.
  3. Set the HDTV switch on the AV connector to TV.
  4. Connect the yellow RCA composite video connector on the D-Connector HD AV Cable to the yellow input jack on the TV. Do not use the D-connector.
  5. Connect the red and white RCA audio connectors on the D-Connector HD AV Cable to the corresponding colored input jacks on the TV.

Note Monaural (mono) TVs only have one audio input jack. If you have a mono TV, connect either the right or the left RCA audio connector to the audio input jack on the TV.

Connect an Xbox 360 console to a digital audio system

If the receiver or amplifier has a digital audio input jack, you can use an optical Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format (S/PDIF) cable instead of the standard red and white analog connectors to receive digital audio. Digital audio input produces higher-quality sound than analog audio input produces.

To connect the Xbox 360 console to a digital audio system, follow these steps:
  1. Follow steps 1 through 4 in the "Connect an Xbox 360 console to a high-definition TV" section or in the "Connect an Xbox 360 console to a standard-definition TV" section.
  2. Connect an optical S/PDIF cable from the AV connector on the D-Connector HD AV Cable to the digital audio input jack on the receiver or on the TV.

Note The D-Connector HD AV Cable does not include an optical S/PDIF cable. The D-Connector HD AV Cable only includes the optical connection port. Therefore, you may have to purchase an optical S/PDIF cable separately. The S/PDIF connection port is located at the end of the cable on the base of the AV connector that you use to attach to the Xbox 360 console.
  3. Turn on the Xbox 360 console. In the System section, you can change the audio and the digital output settings. Select the appropriate digital audio setting for the system.

Set the correct video input

You may have to select the correct video input on the TV. The following terms are common names for video input:
  • Input Select
  • AUX
  • Line In
  • Input
  • Source
  • Video 1
  • EXT
The names of the input types vary among TV manufacturers. See the TV owner's manual for more information.

Important

Occasionally, stationary images in video games can become "burned" into some TV screens. These images can appear as a permanent shadow on the TV screen. For more information, see the TV owner's manual or contact the manufacturer of the TV before you play any games.
