The names of Japanese recipients are displayed as "?????" in a saved Outlook 2003 e-mail message (909357)

SYMPTOMS

When you view an e-mail message that was saved as an .msg file in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, the names of Japanese recipients are displayed as "?????."

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are all true:
  • The message contains the name of a Japanese user in the recipient list.
  • The message was sent by a Microsoft Outlook 2000 (Japanese) user.
  • The message was received and then saved as an .msg file by an Outlook 2003 (English) user.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
