FIX: You may receive an error message when you use the VCBuild.exe command-line tool or the MSBuild.exe command-line tool to build a solution in Visual Studio 2005 (909309)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, the link step of the build process may fail when you try to build a solution by using the VCBuild.exe command-line tool or the MSBuild.exe command-line tool. When this problem occurs, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'd:\LinkIssue\debug\MyDependDll2\MyDependDll2.libd:\LinkIssue\debug\MyDependDll1\MyDependDll1.lib'
Note The error message does not contain a space between the two .lib file paths.

You may experience this problem when the project contains two or more dependent DLL libraries.

Note This problem does not occur when you use the Visual Studio IDE to build the solution.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the VCBuild.exe command-line tool and the MSBuild.exe command-line tool do not correctly separate the library files during the link step of the build process.
