The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2003), Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2003), Enterprise Architect Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2003), Enterprise Developer Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET (2003), Academic Edition
  • Microsoft Visual C++ .NET (2003)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run an application that is built on the Active Template Library (ATL) framework on Microsoft Windows 2000 or on an earlier version, the application does not run. You may receive the following error message:
The procedure entry point FreeAddrInfoW could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll.
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The application uses the CSocketAddr class.
  • The application was written by using Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Unicode implementation of the ATL framework uses the FreeAddrInfoW Windows Sockets function in the CSocketAddr class. However, this API is only implemented in Microsoft Windows XP and in later versions.

Note The FreeAddrInfoW Windows Sockets function was introduced in Microsoft Windows XP and in Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The FreeAddrInfoW Windows Sockets function adds support for the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) stack.
