SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1, the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Domain Name System (DNS) provider may create DNS resource records that are initialized with a Time to Live (TTL) of 0. However, the zone default TTL value is 3600.

RESOLUTION

Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, create a new host Address (A) resource record with the WMI DNS provider. Then, change the TTL value from 0 to the zone default TTL value 3600. To do this, use the Modify method of the MicrosoftDNS_AType class.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

The TTL property of a host Address (A) resource record is the time period, in seconds, that the resource record can be cached by other DNS servers or by a program. The resource record is cached by other DNS servers or by a program. When you set a record's TTL value to 0, this instructs programs and DNS servers not to cache the record. Because not caching the record affects performance, this is not a recommended configuration.

The Modify method of the MicrosoftDNS_AType class updates the TTL and the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a host Address (A) resource record. This method makes these updates by applying the values that are specified as the input parameters of this method. If a new value for a parameter is not specified, the current value for the parameter is not changed. This method returns a reference to the modified object as an output parameter.

If the value of the TTL input parameter is the same as the current TTL value of the resource record, the Modify method of the MicrosoftDNS_AType class call generates a "Generic Failure" error. This error has an extended error status that is similar to the following:

The hotfix that this article describes makes sure that all newly created resource records are initialized with the zone default TTL value of 3600. Also, the Modify method of the MicrosoftDNS_AType class can be used to set the TTL value of existing records to 0, to non-zero values, to the zone default value by specifying a TTL of 0xFFFFFFFF (4294967295).
