Xbox 360: You receive the "Unformatted device" error message (908647)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you view Storage Devices after you select Memory, an unformatted device appears.

CAUSE

The device was recognized by the Xbox 360 console. However, the device has not been formatted. To view the device, it must be formatted.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Connect the device to a different port.
  2. Format the device by using a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer.
    1. Plug the device into the computer.
    2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
    3. Right-click the device, and then click Format.
    4. Make sure that the file system is set to FAT, and then click Start.
  3. Try the device in the Xbox 360 console after you format it.
  4. If these steps do not resolve the behavior, try connecting the device to a different Xbox 360 console.
