A user receives a friendly error page instead of a custom error page when the user accesses a secure Web site by using Internet Explorer 6 (908535)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

SYMPTOMS

You configure a Web server or a proxy server to return a custom error page. However, a user may receive a friendly error page instead of the custom error page when the user accesses a secure Web site.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 closes the connection when a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) host returns an error. Therefore, the socket is closed. Internet Explorer does not read the custom error page if the custom error page is in the closed socket.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, redirect users to another Web page instead of directly returning a custom error page.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
