SYMPTOMS
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 may mistake a new logical unit number (LUN) storage device for a former LUN storage device when you install the new device in the same location as the former device. Unpredictable behavior may then occur. For example, you may receive a Stop error message that is similar to the following:
STOP 0x000000D1 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Note The parameters vary depending on the system. CAUSE
This problem may occur if your storage solution uses SCSI inquiry page 83h serial numbers to differentiate between LUN storage devices. The problem occurs because the Scsiport.sys driver does not use SCSI inquiry page 83h serial numbers during Plug and Play operations.
For example, if the bus is not rescanned after you move a LUN storage device and before you install a new LUN storage device, Windows is not aware of the changes that you make. Because the Scsiport.sys driver does not use inquiry page 83h serial numbers, the data that Windows uses to identify changes to the LUN storage device configuration is unchanged. Therefore, Windows does not detect that a new LUN has been installed.STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.WORKAROUND
To avoid this problem, rescan the bus after you move a LUN storage device and before you install a new LUN storage device. Then, scan the bus again.
