You experience multiple symptoms when you try to install Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 (908182)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006, you experience the following symptoms:
  • The System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 Setup program does not finish. However, the program installation progress bar continues to scroll across the display.
  • In the Status area of the Setup screen, you receive the following message:Please wait while Internet Information Services 6.0 is installed.
  • After approximately 15 minutes, the Setup program reports that an error occurred, and then the Setup program rolls back the installation. If you click the Error tab, the following error information is displayed:
    Internet Information Services 6.0 installation has failed. All changes made by the Internet Information Services 6.0 installation to the system were rolled back. (ID: 4024)
  • The following information appears at the end of the Dpmsetup.log file:

    Information : Check the IIS services.
    Information : Check the IIS service W3SVC.
    Data : W3SVC service status = Running
    *** Error : ASP.NET is not enabled on this computer. To enable ASP.NET, open Control Panel, select Add or Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components, and select Application Server. Then retry the operation.
    * Exception : => Internet Information Services 6.0 installation has failed. All changes made by the Internet Information Services 6.0 installation to the system were rolled back. Manually install Internet Information Services 6.0. For instructions, see "Troubleshooting Setup" in the DPM Setup Help.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the ASP.NET component is not installed on the computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0. To install System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), the following IIS components must be installed:
  • Enable network COM+ access
  • ASP.NET
Note These two components are not available on the System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 installation CD.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the ASP.NET component on the computer that is running IIS. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. Click Application server, and then click Details.
  4. Click to select the ASP.NET check box, click to select the Enable network COM+ access check box, and then click OK.
  5. Click Next, and then click Finish when the Setup program finishes configuring Windows.
  6. Restart the installation of System Center Data Protection Manager 2006.

MORE INFORMATION

System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 uses Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services. SQL Server Reporting Services requires IIS. If IIS is not installed when you install System Center Data Protection Manager 2006, you are prompted to insert the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 CD to install IIS.
