Messaging services do not work as expected in Exchange 2000 Server after you install Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) (907970)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following cenario. You install the update rollup for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server server:

In this scenario, the Exchange 2000 Server messaging services are no longer available after you install this update rollup. If you view the Services snap-in the status area of the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service, the Status column displays "Starting" instead of the expected "Started."

Additionally, other Microsoft Exchange Server services that depend on the Exchange System Attendant service may not be available.

WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this problem, make the Exchange System Attendant service dependent on the IIS Admin Service. Then, restart the Exchange System Attendant service. To do this, follow these steps.

Make the Exchange System Attendant service dependent on the IIS Admin Service

Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.
Click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine window.
Expand the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeSA
In the right pane, double-click DependOnService.
In the Multi-String Editor box, type IISADMIN underneath the existing entries, and then click OK.
On the Registry menu, click Exit.

Restart the Exchange System Attendant service

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
Right-click Microsoft Exchange System Attendant, and then click Restart.
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart the other services.

Note If you cannot restart the Exchange System Attendant service, you may have to restart the Microsoft Exchange Server server.
