Overview

The Ring of Light (RoL) is divided into four quadrants that enclose the power indicator light, as shown in the following image:

  • The power indicator light indicates whether the console is turned on or off and whether the disc tray is moving.
  • The green lights on the RoL indicate the state of the Xbox 360 console and the controller connections.
  • The RoL can detect the vertical or the horizontal position of the Xbox 360 console and rotates the quadrants accordingly. This means that the relative position of the four quadrants will remain the same whether the console is in the horizontal or in the vertical position. For detailed information, see the table in the "More Information" section.
  • Red lights on the RoL indicate error codes. For more information about red lights flashing on the Ring of Light, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Behavior of the power indicator light when the disc tray opens and closes

  • When you open the disc tray and the disc tray is moving, a green light will flash on the power indicator.
  • When you close the disc tray and the disc tray is moving, a green light will flash on the power indicator.

Note There is one exception: When the console closes the disc tray because the console has been turned off, the power indicator light turns off and remains off.

Behavior of the Ring of Light when you use the console

  • The green lights on the RoL indicate the state of the Xbox 360 console and the controller connections. During typical use of the console, the green lights do not flash.
  • The RoL represents four ports for the controllers.
    • As you attach each controller to the console, another quadrant in the RoL illuminates to indicate the controller ports that are being using.
    • A light on the Xbox Guide button on each Xbox 360 Controller corresponds to the RoL on the console. For example, if you are using controller 1, the first quadrant on the RoL is illuminated on the console and the upper-left quadrant is illuminated on the controller.
See the following table for more information about the green lights on the RoL.
