You may not hear sounds when you add or remove removable devices on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (907426)

SYMPTOMS

When you add or remove removable devices from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), you may not hear sounds or any kind of audio feedback. For example, you experience this behavior when you insert or attach any one of the following devices:
  • USB Memory Key device
  • PC/PCMCIA Card device
  • PC Express Card device

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 SP4 does not have any sounds associated with any one or more of the following program events:
  • Device Connect
  • Device Disconnect
  • Device Failed to Connect

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

To view the associations between program events and sounds in Windows 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Sounds and Multimedia.
  2. In the Sounds and Multimedia Properties dialog box, notice that program events such as Device Connect, Device Disconnect, and Device Failed to Connect do not exist in Windows Default sound scheme or in the Utopia sound scheme.
For comparison purposes, you can view the associations between program events and sounds in Microsoft Windows XP. To do this, follow these steps on a computer that is running Windows XP:
  1. Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Sounds and Audio Devices.
  2. In the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties dialog box, the following are the default associations between program events and sounds:
    Program eventSound
