SUMMARY

This article describes how to use the Xbox Live account recovery feature to restore an Xbox Live enabled profile that has been removed or deleted, to an Xbox 360 Memory Unit or to an Xbox 360 Hard Drive.

MORE INFORMATION

The account recovery feature lets you download your profile information from the Xbox Live servers. Do not use account recovery to take your Xbox Live enabled profile with you wherever you go. If you want to take your Xbox Live enabled profile with you to a friend's house, use a memory unit.

To use account recovery, you must provide your Windows Live ID user name and password. Because each Windows Live ID account can be associated with only one profile, the correct profile will be downloaded.

Note the following important information about account recovery:
  • When you perform account recovery, any other copies of your Xbox Live enabled profile that are on any memory units or hard drives will be invalidated to help protect your security.
  • If you use your profile on both the original Xbox console and the Xbox 360 console, copies of your profile on the original Xbox console are not invalidated unless you perform account recovery on an original Xbox console.
  • Account recovery erases any pass codes that are stored in the Xbox Live enabled profile. Therefore, you may have to create new pass codes to help protect the Xbox Live enabled profile.
  • Account recovery on the Xbox 360 console does not reset your pass code for your profile on the original Xbox console.
To use account recovery, follow these steps:
  1. If you are signed in to a profile, move to the Xbox Live section of the Xbox Dashboard, press the X button on your Xbox 360 controller, and then select Yes, Sign out.
  2. In the Xbox Live section of the Xbox Dashboard, press the D-pad up or down to select Recover Gamertag from Xbox Live, and then press the A button.
  3. Follow the directions on the screen to complete account recovery.
