You receive an "ERROR - Agent installation state is not 'Installed'" error message in SMS 2003 when you start a software inventory cycle on a computer that is running Windows 98 (907285)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, you receive the following error message when you start a software inventory cycle on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98:
ERROR - Agent installation state is not "Installed". Abandon cycle!!
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You have just finished running the Systems Management Installation Wizard (SMSMan.exe).
  • You manually start the software inventory cycle by using the Systems Management item in Control Panel.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the software inventory component in the SMS Control Panel is not fully installed, even though the component is listed as installed in the Systems Management item in Control Panel. Therefore, the Initiate Action task fails.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, wait several minutes for the SMS 2003 legacy client to fully install. Then, manually start the software inventory cycle.
