You receive a "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 cannot be installed because this server is not running a Microsoft Windows 2003 or later operating system" error message when you try to install Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 (906896)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 cannot be installed because this server is not running a Microsoft Windows 2003 or later operating system.
We do not support the installation of Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems. However, this error message is incorrect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Although Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 is not supported on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems, Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 is supported on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 if the computer is running in 32-bit emulation mode.
