SYMPTOMS

When you try to play certain content from Online Spotlight in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
  • The screen is black, and you do not hear any audio.
  • You receive an error message that resembles the following:
    The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec (a file to compress/decompress audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the content contains links to Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX) files. The issue occurs because Media Center Edition 2004 does not support ASX files.

Note ASX files are supported in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 or in later versions.
