Inaccurately marked changes may appear in a revised XML document when you use the Compare and Merge Documents feature in Word 2003 (906575)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003

SYMPTOMS

You use the Compare and Merge Documents feature in Microsoft Office Word 2003 to compare a revised XML document with the original version of an XML document. When you do this, inaccurately marked changes may appear in the revised XML document.

Note The Compare and Merge Documents command is on the Tools menu.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the current Word XML file format does not support Random Security Identifiers (RSIDs). RSIDs are required to accurately mark changes.

RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Word 2003 post-Service Pack 2 Hotfix Package that is dated November 10, 2005. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

898777 Description of the Word 2003 post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package: November 10, 2005

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix is a design change that enables Word 2003 to include RSIDs in the XML file format.

Note When you install this hotfix, you do not add RSIDs to an existing XML document for changes that have already been made to the document. For the Compare and Merge Documents feature to work with XML documents, the XML documents must be created or edited in the updated version of Word 2003.

RSIDs are a form of edit tracking. Without the hotfix, Word 2003 does not track the changes in an XML document. After you install this hotfix, open the XML document, or create a new XML document. When you modify the XML document, RSIDs are added to the document to track the changes that you make. Word 2003 does not recognize past changes in an XML document. Therefore, Word 2003 cannot create RSIDs after the fact. RSIDs are created dynamically as you modify the XML document.

STATUS
