You cannot synchronize Novell Directory Service data with Active Directory by using MSDSS in Windows 2000 (906517)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows 2000, you cannot synchronize Novell Directory Service (NDS) data with the Active Directory directory service by using Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS). An error message that is similar to the following is logged in the System log:
The specified directory service attribute or value already exists.
Additionally, MSDSS adds an entry to the failed object list. This entry is the same as the error message.

CAUSE

NDS supports six values in the Postal Address attribute. NDS does not require that these values are unique. However, Active Directory expects that each value in a Postal Address attribute is unique.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, correct the data in NDS to remove duplicate values. To do this, you must be the NDS administrator.

MORE INFORMATION

Active Directory supports an arbitrary number of values in the Postal Address attribute. If any two of the six values in NDS are the same when you try to synchronize NDS data with Active Directory, Active Directory returns the following error message:
ERROR_DS_ATTRIBUTE_OR_VALUE_EXISTS (0x80072007).
For example, consider the following scenario:
  • The Postal Address attribute in NDS contains the following values:
    • 1234 Main Street
    • 1234 Main Street
    • Anytown, OH 12345
  • You try to synchronize data with Active Directory.
In this scenario, the error message that is discussed in the "Symptoms" section occurs. This error occurs because two of the values in the Postal Address attribute are the same.
